Edward Bellamy: Looking Backward Por estos días retorné para visitar a un viejo pero no muy íntimo amigo mio: Edward Bellamy. Compré mi copia de Looking Backward [Mirando hacia atrás / El año 2000] en abril de 1985, cuando era estudiante de literatura inglesa y cursaba un seminario sobre utopías. Mantengo un positivo pero vago recuerdo de él. Me gustó, pero no sabría decir exactamente porqué. Así que decidí volver a leerlo.
De inmediato sentí una familiar alegría (¿es “alegría” la palabra correcta? ¿Regocijo?). Bellamy ciertamente era un tipo extraño, un socialista patriótico norteamericano. Hoy en día, esa conjunción de términos es una contradicción política insuperable, pero en su época el progreso de la nación era todavía una apuesta abierta y el libro, publicado en 1888, fue uno de los grandes éxitos literarios. El primer capítulo inaugura la novela estilística y temáticamente, con una satírica alegoría del capitalismo del siglo XIX. Mi traducción es la siguiente:
“Para darle al lector una impresión general de la manera cómo la gente convivía en esos días, y especialmente de las relaciones entre los ricos y los pobres, quizá no pueda hacer nada mejor que comparar la sociedad así como era en ese momento con un prodigioso carruaje al cual las masas de la humanidad, amarradas al arnés, arrastraban laboriosamente a lo largo de una montañosa y arenosa vía. El impulso era el hambre y no permitía retrasos, aunque el avance era necesariamente muy lento. A pesar de la dificultad de halar el carruaje al menos un poco por una vía tan dura, la parte superior estaba cubierta de pasajeros que nunca descendían, ni siquiera en las pendientes más empinadas. Estos asientos arriba eran aireados y confortables. Bien encima y lejos del polvo, sus ocupantes podían cómodamente disfrutar del paisaje o críticamente discutir los méritos del grupo de los esforzados. Como es natural, estos puestos eran muy escasos y la competencia por ellos era aguda. Cada cual buscaba, como meta principal de su vida, asegurar un asiento en el carruaje para sí y heredarlo a su hijo. De acuerdo con las reglas del carruaje, un hombre podía cederle el asiento a quien quisiera, pero por el otro lado había tantos accidentes por medio de los cuales el asiento podía ser perdido por completo y en cualquier momento. Por más que fueran tan cómodos, los asientos eran muy inseguros y en cada tumbo repentino del carruaje personas se resbalaban de sus asientos y caían al suelo, donde inmediatamente se les obligaba a agarrar la soga y ayudar a halar el carruaje en el cual antes habían viajado con tanto placer. Naturalmente se consideraba que perder su asiento era una terrible desgracia y el miedo de que esto les pasara a ellos o a sus amigos era una constante nube que oscurecía la felicidad de los que iban montando.
Usted preguntará: ¿Pero ellos solamente pensaban en sí mismos? ¿Su lujo no se convertía en intolerable para ellos si lo comparaban con la suerte de sus hermanos y hermanas en el arnés, conociendo que su propio peso aumentaba el esfuerzo? ¿No sentían compasión por sus semejantes de los cuales sólo la fortuna los distinguía? Oh, sí, la compasión era frecuentemente expresada por los que montaban a favor de los que tenían que halar el carruaje, especialmente cuando el vehículo llegaba a un mal sitio la vía, como sucedía constantemente, o a una montaña particularmente empinada. En esos momentos la tensión desesperada del grupo, sus saltos y caídas agonizantes bajo los azotes inmisericordes del hambre, los muchos que se desmayaban en la soga y eran pisoteados en el lodo, conformaban un espectáculo angustioso que frecuentemente provocaba muestras de sentimientos sumamente encomiables de los que estaban en la parte superior del carruaje. En esos momentos los pasajeros harían un llamado alentador a los trabajadores en la soga, exhortándolos a ser pacientes y ofreciendo esperanzas de una posible compensación en otro mundo por la dureza de su suerte, mientras que otros contribuían para comprar bálsamos y linimentos para los lisiados y los heridos. Se estaba de acuerdo en que era una gran lástima que el carruaje fuera tan difícil de halar y había un sentimiento general de alivio cuando se lograba superar un pedazo especialmente malo de la vía. Este alivio no se debía, de hecho, por completo a la consideración del grupo de trabajadores, porque siempre existía en estos malos tramos el peligro de un vuelco general en el cual todos perderían sus asientos. […]
Soy agudamente consciente que esto les parecerá a los hombres y a las mujeres del siglo veinte una increíble crueldad, pero hay dos hechos, ambos muy curiosos, que parcialmente lo explican. Primero, se creía firme y sinceramente que no existía otra manera por la cual la sociedad podía funcionar, excepto cuando los muchos halaban de la soga y los pocos montaban, y no sólo eso, sino que también ninguna mejora radical era apenas posible en el arnés, el carruaje, la vía o la distribución del trabajo. Siempre había sido como era y siempre sería así. Era una lástima, pero no había nada qué hacer y la filosofía prohibía malgastar compasión en lo que estaba más allá del remedio. [...]” (ps. 38-40)
Estos apartes recuerdan intensamente a la sátira social de Jonathan Swift en su crudeza, su sarcasmo, su oscuro humor y su toma de posición. Como suele suceder con las utopías, las partes del libro dedicadas a describir la nueva organización social del año 2000 son menos logradas literariamente, pero interesantes por sus propios méritos intelectuales. Especialmente ahora, cuando el año 2000 ha inaugurado una tormentosa década en la cual nuevos dueños han tomado posesión de los asientos de arriba y han dirigido el carruaje hacia lugares especialmente montañosos y llenos de precipicios, es interesante volver sobre la novela porque no es una utopía socialista “tradicional” (¿cómo es una utopía socialista “tradicional”?) No es una coincidencia que Frederick Winslow Taylor (1856-1915), el creador de la “administración científica” y uno de los primeros consultores empresariales, haya sido contemporáneo de Bellamy, quien se anticipó literariamente al movimiento Taylorista.
Eficiencia en la producción es la fuente del bienestar colectivo; esta es la premisa que los dos comparten. Si le interesa saber porqué la tarjeta de crédito es uno de los instrumentos más importantes de la utopía socialista de Bellamy y le inquieta saber las razones por las cuales la misma tarjeta es hoy en día una de las sogas de la cual todos halamos el carruaje, entonces es posible que la lectura de Looking Backward también le genere un cierto regocijo.
