En ocasiones, el internet hace realidad su promesa de utopía concreta y me ofrece uno de mis anhelados textos, en un blog, en un foro, en una página de literatura, en una editorial virtual, o en alguno de los demás sitios de intercambio de archivos. En la mayoría de los casos, mi inicial felicidad (“¡Oh, por fin, el texto que tanto busqué!”) se torna oscura exasperación cuando noto que el origen del texto no está debidamente declarado. ¿De qué me puede servir el texto completo de, por ejemplo, la Antígona de Sófocles si no está declarada la edición de la que se tomó el texto ni el nombre del traductor?
El nombre del traductor es importante porque la traducción puede estar cobijada todavía por sus derechos de autor de una obra derivada. Entonces, puede ser que el texto no sea del dominio público, aunque esté colgado en un sitio de acceso universal. Este problema es, por supuesto, especialmente álgido para el bibliófilo de habla castellana, porque muchas de las traducciones de obras que en su idioma original ya pertenecen al dominio público, siguen protegidas.
La edición de la cual se tomó el texto es igualmente importante porque sin este dato, el texto no es citable. Y si no es citable no lo puedo usar profesionalmente. Así de simple.
Entonces, sin el dato de la edición de origen y, en caso dado, del traductor, gran parte del esfuerzo de la persona que, con la mejor intención, digitalizó el texto y lo puso en la red, se perdió. Y eso es una gran lástima, porque tanto el esfuerzo como la pérdida son mayúsculas.
