Así, las expectativas eran mayores cuando se apagaron las luces y vimos a los drugos de Alex en el bar lácteo Korova, piteando leche-plus con velocet, tratando de encontrar una respuesta a la pregunta ¿y ahora qué pasa, eh?
En la escena en la que Alex asesina a la señora de los gatos con una escultura en forma de falo, mi novia me apretó la mano en silencio. El placer de las imágenes y los sonidos me llevaron a la sala de cine en las escasas ocasiones en las que la película volvía a mostrarse, y una vez incluso la alquilé en video, cosa que no se debería hacer con ciertas películas. Sin embargo, para mí era claro: 2001 Odisea en el espacio era una película completa, La naranja mecánica una película meramente “bonita” (impresionantemente “bonita”).
Hasta que leí el libro, de Anthony Burgess, por primera vez, hace quizá unos 5 o 7 años. Fue una revelación. En la película, el lenguaje artificial de los drugos tiene un efecto cuasi-musical y le da cierta cadencia y forma a los diálogos de los delincuentes juveniles. En el libro, es efecto es inmediatamente alienante: las primeras páginas son prácticamente incomprensibles. El autor no es amable con el lector y hay una cierta violencia en la manera cómo nos obliga a apropiarnos de las categorías con las que el narrador presenta su mundo. Apenas se ha superado esta primera barrera lingüística, viene la violencia, narrada con cinismo. Y más violencia. Y más. Y cada vez peor.
ULTRAVIOLENCIA. En muchos libros se encuentran descripciones de actos violentos, pero La naranja mecánica es diferente. Normalmente, la violencia en los libros tiene razones, de alguna manera u otra “objetivas”. Alex no tiene razones objetivas; ni siquiera tiene razones subjetivas de algún peso. La novela es ultraviolenta no porque sea especialmente cruda en sus descripciones, sino porque la violencia es una sinrazón ubicua. Alex es violento; sus drugos son violentos; la policía es violenta; los carceleros son violentos; el cura es violento; los políticos son violentos; el escritor y la organización política a la que pertenecen son violentos; todo es violencia. ULTRAVIOLENCIA.
Esto es, claro, antes de que la ultraviolencia se convirtiera en moda; antes de las películas de Tarrantino y los juegos de computador creados especialmente para menores.
