Por sus propias letras, por los archivos de los cargos públicos ejercidos y por el drama en torno de su muerte y su posterior fama, la vida de Moro está extraordinariamente bien documentada. El uso frecuente de fuentes originales a través de esta biografía crea un efecto de inmediatez muy interesante.
Así, por ejemplo, el capítulo 32 sobre el juicio está escrito como si fuera una transcripción literal de los diálogos en la corte y comienza así (mi traducción): “Sir Thomas More, se le acusa del intento de privar al Rey de su título legal como máxima autoridad de la Iglesia Inglesa, lo que es traición”. Posteriormente reproduce las intervenciones de los diferentes actores del juicio y concluye con la sentencia:
“Sir Thomas More, se le arrastrará a través de la ciudad de Londres hasta Tyburn, donde se le colgará hasta que esté medio muerto. Se le bajará de la soga estando todavía vivo y se le sacarán sus intestinos y se le cortarán sus partes privadas; se le cortará la cabeza y su cuerpo se dividirá en cuatro partes, y su cabeza y su cuerpo se mostrarán en los lugares que el Rey disponga.”
Ciertamente, es una biografía que muestra todos los detalles y que amerita una lectura.
