Bogotá y otras grandes ciudades en 3000 años de historia ¿Cuál es la población histórica de una ciudad? Esta pregunta es muy difícil de responder. Por un lado, no es del todo claro qué es una ciudad y por lo tanto cuál es su extensión. Por ejemplo, París no cambió sus límites administrativos desde 1860, cuando tuvo 1.3 millones de habitantes; hoy apenas tiene 2.2 millones, lo mismo que en 1875. Pero el área metropolitana (la “Gran París”) tiene cerca de 12 millones.
Incluso si se usa un concepto flexible de “ciudad”, para los tiempos históricos los datos son escasos y contradictorios. Así, una pregunta aparentemente ingenua como “¿Cuántos habitantes tuvo Bogotá en la época de Doña Inés de Hinojosa?” se resiste a ser fácilmente resuelta por vía internet; hay que acudir a los clásicos, en este caso Chandler y Fox, 3.000 Years of Urban Growth.
Este es un libro diferente. El que busca una narración de cómo las ciudades han crecido, florecido y decaído a lo largo de la historia, desde los tiempos de Moisés (1360 a. C.) hasta el comienzo de la época industrial y la explosión demográfica (1850 d. C.), será inmediatamente decepcionado. Excepto una breve introducción que describe la finalidad del libro y los métodos utilizados, la mayoría de las páginas (en total son 431) contienen datos, un mínimo comentario y la fuente respectiva.
Pero eso no significa que sea aburridor de leer; al contrario. Tiene todos los datos. Así, resulta apasionante escoger una ciudad (o una región) y leer atentamente. Y lo que uno encuentra es algo así:

Esta tabla nos resuelve la inquietud sobre Inés de Hinojosa; en sus tiempos Bogotá tuvo alrededor de 12.000 habitantes. Chandler y Fox sólo incluyeron ciudades que, en algún momento entre 800 y 1850 d. C., tuvieron más de 40.000 habitantes, en el caso de Asia, o más de 20.000 habitantes, en los demás continentes. Aparentemente, Tunja quedó por fuera.
Esta pequeña muestra indica el extraordinario esfuerzo que supuso compilar todos los datos. Chandler trabajó más de treinta años en su consecución y verificación. No sorprende que este libro haya sido el primer intento en la historia de recopilar las estadísticas básicas del crecimiento urbano global desde la edad del hierro en adelante. Antes, posiblemente nadie se haya atrevido a encarar semejante tarea. Un verdadero clásico moderno, muy recomendable.
