Comencé hoy la lectura de mi “biografía introductoria de rigor”, con este libro. Traté de leer el prólogo y el primer capítulo, y después miré furtivamente otros capítulos. Finalmente, cerré el libro y opté por escribir este breve comentario.
¿Qué se puede decir de este libro? Lo primero que se me ocurrió es que se trata de un extenso ejercicio en nombrar personas famosas, libros famosos, ocasiones famosas, etc., para que algo de tanto esplendor se refleje en las propias obras. El prólogo comienza con una noticia sobre los servicios fúnebres para Anthony Burgess, publicado por el Times el 17 de junio de 1994, que contiene una extensa lista de los nombres de las personas ilustres que atendieron.
El resto del prólogo aparentemente está dedicado a un día en la vida del autor que es también (¿coincidencia?) un día en la vida de Anthony Burgess. Son mencionados, en la primera página: Fausto, Professor Richard Ellmann, Goldsmith’s Chair of English Literature, Lord David Cecil, Hermione Lee, Emory University, Coca-Cola, Oxford, Oscar Wilde, Ezra Pound, el restaurante Randolph, la revista Punch, y Henry James.
En la segunda página aparecen: James Joyce, Wilde (de nuevo), Lord Alfred Douglas, Sir Harold Macmillan, Zuleika Dobson, John Wain, los colegios universitarios St. John, Brasenose y Magdalen, Philip Larkin, Brenda (?), Homero, Milton, Bórges, Anthony Burgess (de nuevo), Bangor, Stoke-on-Trent, Hamish Hamilton, Stephen Fry, Ellmann (de nuevo), Bosie (!), Alan Bates, Jude Law, Lord Alfred Douglas (de nuevo), Gerard Manley Hopkins, Kingsley Amis.
En total, si mis cuentas son correctas, son 35 nombres propios en apenas una página y media, incluyendo dos extensas notas de pie de página – de carácter narrativo.
Pronto, el libro me pareció como un coctel con muchos invitados. Todos son muy importantes y en una aplicación de la falacia de la composición el anfitrión espera que su coctel sea tan importante como sus convidados. Es en vano. Corriendo de aquí para allá, afanosamente presenta unos a otros: “Hola, Oscar, ¿conoces a Gerard?” “Lord Alfred, ¿habías tenido oportunidad de charlar con Anthony?” En una nota de pie aprendemos que, en efecto, Anthony mantuvo un intercambio de cartas con Lord Alfred. ¿Quién puede aguantar eso?
Si le gustan los cocteles literarios y tiene una buena enciclopedia a la mano, es posible que saque algún provecho de este libro. Yo decidí que me iba con mi whisky a otro lado.
